My Telegram account was hacked last week, but fortunately, no damage was done. I mainly use Telegram to watch videos, and there’s no sensitive information in it. I also enabled two-factor authentication (2FA) immediately afterward.

It all started when I received a message on Telegram saying I needed to verify my account, or it would be deactivated within 24 hours. I didn’t think too much of it at the time—my account seemed fine (though in hindsight, I should have been more cautious and checked on a desktop to confirm whether it was an official message). I went ahead and clicked “Verify” and entered the six-digit code sent to my phone.

I didn’t notice anything suspicious right away, but the next morning, I saw that my account had been accessed from Thailand. I quickly clicked “It wasn’t me” and enabled various security features to protect the account.

Telegram has a “Saved Messages” feature, similar to sending messages to yourself on Teams or WeChat. Many people use it to store their usernames, passwords, and other private information. Luckily, I never used that feature. Otherwise, if someone had gained access to my account, all that private data could have been compromised.

There are a lot of scam accounts on Telegram. In fact, most people trying to initiate partnerships on this platform turn out to be scammers. Legitimate companies generally don’t use Telegram for business communication.

I’ve also noticed that many accounts have been deleted recently—likely because they were banned or automatically removed after being inactive for a long time.

Everyone should absolutely enable two-factor authentication (2FA) on Telegram! I’ve heard that in 99% of the cases where accounts are hacked, 2FA hadn’t been enabled.

Telegram’s login process is overly simple—you just need to enter a phone number and a verification code sent via SMS. Without an additional password step, anyone with access to the code can log in. That’s incredibly insecure.
